Eagle’s Courage

Last week, one parent quoted our blog post.

The real challenge for us (Acton Academy KL) is to forge character by encouraging Eagles to take the courage to make decisions and commitments. So they can take the step forward, to become who they are meant to be—their calling.

Coincidentally, we asked Acton Academy KL parents: “Tell us a time where your Eagle took a courageous step?” Here are some of their answers:

“Getting past the Malaysian immigration autogate for the first time all on her own. A lot of fumbling and assistance offered by the Malay-speaking immigration officer with instructions that she did not fully understand, but she pulled through and got out of the booth without any hoo-hahs.”

“When he decided to overcome his fears or clowns by buying a balloon from him.”

“Going on the Monsoon 360 water slide in Sunway Lagoon”

“Speak up”

Each child took a step into an unknown and strange land. Their parents encouraged them to move forward. It’s not about making their child feel good. It’s not laying out the tracks so their child can get over it. It’s not self-esteem either. It’s actually moving, doing and growing.

Dr. Peterson explained further (in three minutes).

Let’s end with Steve Tomlinson’s quote*:

“Would you rather be right or surprised?”

Like the examples above, each act of courage is a surprise. Often, even to the child himself. The continuous journey of overcoming fear, where Joseph Campbell called it the unknown world is the Hero’s Journey.
