Week 2! Go! Go! Go!
Weekly Updates
Preschool / Spark Studio (PS) Update
Birthday Celebration
On Tuesday, we celebrated Alessa’s birthday! Happy 5th birthday, Alessa. May you continue to grow in light and love and curiosity!
Writing Their Name
This sprint, the Eagles are to write their own names behind the art paper before starting their artwork. One Eagle made a particular effort to write his name. During the closing circle, the Eagles were asked what they learned while doing this artwork. The Eagle who was trying very hard to write his name mentioned that he looked at a card with his name on it and tried copying from it. Wow! The Eagles are coming up with their own solutions when faced with difficulties! We salute this Eagle for having the courage to share about his learning during closing circle!
Art Exploration
The Eagles experimented with watercolour and tempera paint. Some chose to paint pictures and some decided to let the colours speak for themselves.
Elementary Studio (ES) Update
Writers Workshop
This week saw the launch of the Biography Writer’s Workshop. The Eagles delved into the Hero’s Journey of their chosen heroes like Rosa Parks, Wilma Rudolph, Louis Braille and Michael Jordan.
Studio Promises
The Eagles are in the process of testing out different ‘rules’ for the community to see what truly works in the studio. Only after vigorous testing, crafting and tweaking can they discover a working system.
EB Council & Leadership
The Eagles took charge and elected the new EB Council. Candidates shared how they would go about being a council rep if elected.
The Eagles also initiated discussions about kitchen cleanliness and teamwork in Acton. They discussed roles and responsibilities and pitching in as a team to get the job done.
Team Building
Apsara and Chelsea planned and ran the team building games for the studio this week. The game of the week was Who is the Murderer? A detective is chosen to leave the scene. When they are out, a ‘murderer’ is chosen and they ‘murder’ a victim by winking at them. The Detective returns and has three guesses to figure out who the murderer is.
Lip Dub
There was not much lip dub in action yet. The Eagles are still focused on the planning stage of the production. There was a flurry of memorization, prop planning and costume design. Next week will get more exciting … choreography is coming up!
Positive Character Trait Celebration
Positive character traits are something to be celebrated and the week ended with an ice-cream celebration to honour the positive character traits that the Eagle showed throughout the week. The Eagles collected 40 pom poms, one for each positive trait demonstrated in the studio this week.
Middle Studio (MS) Update
Quest Challenge: Cells (Part 5) Skits
The Eagles received clues about their allocated cell and its process throughout the week. When they had gathered enough information, the challenge was to prepare a skit about what they thought to be their cell and what it did. The Eagles had to guess each other’s cells and processes and judge each other’s skits.
When voting time came in, there were mixed reactions. One Eagle said to his fellow Eagles, “You won the vote because of bribery!”. Another one really enjoyed the irreverence of Morris’ skit: “I voted for Morris because I liked his props.”
Throughout the week, the Eagles tried to get the Guide to confirm the answers, hints and clues that they were given. They seem to have forgotten that Guides don’t answer questions.
Genre Challenge: Who’s Bigger (Discovery)
The Eagles paired up and challenged each other’s Biology Hero based on their hero’ achievements. It was a bit of a struggle to get the first pair started, but after that speed bump they got into the spirit of things.
Boxing with Master Lee
The Eagles continued getting fit by boxing with Master Lee. This week’s challenge was to stare directly and fiercely into each other’s eyes.
Two weeks in, filled with growth and discovery.
The question: How do you grow at Acton? Bigger? Sharper? Upholding promises?
or like the Pre-school Eagles—just express (in paint)? And whichever choice you’ve made—When does a Hero submit to authority?
