FAQ

Philosophy

How is Acton KL different?

ActonKL is fundamentally different from traditional schools. There are no bells and no lectures. Children are in control of their own learning. Specifically:

  • Child-driven, self-paced learning;
  • Real-world projects and apprenticeships;
  • Multi-age/ grade classes;
  • Student self-governance;
  • Exploration and assessment of skill levels, learning styles, aptitudes, personality traits, and interests;
  • Guides rather than teachers;
  • Socratic Discussions rather than lectures;
  • Mastery learning and student portfolios of achievements rather than grades.
Will children be grouped into grades?

We believe that children learn best when working with other children who are both younger and older than themselves. In addition to an individualized curriculum for every child, different ages of children work together in the following groups:

  • Preschool for ages 4 to 7
  • Elementary for ages 7 to 11
  • Middle for ages 11 to 14
  • Launchpad for ages 15+
Does ActonKL serve special needs children?

We are not trained to serve children with special needs but we welcome children who learn through non-traditional methods. For more information, please click here.

What is a Hero’s Journey?

We believe that each of us has a special calling in life. In the journey of finding that calling, we will learn to overcome a series of trials with integrity and purpose. Our mission is to prepare your child for his or her unique journey.

What is the Socratic Method and why does ActonKL use it?

In the Socratic Method, the ‘adult figure’ serves as a guide, setting up scenarios and asking questions to stimulate critical thinking and independent learning. ActonKL believes that through discussing and actively making arguments to support their beliefs, children gain a better understanding of a topic compared to passively taking notes during a lecture.

Is ActonKL a Montessori school?

We respect and incorporate Maria Montessori’s philosophy, but we are not a Montessori school. Our learning methods include the latest interactive technologies, hands-on projects and the Socratic Method for discussions.

Is ActonKL a religious school?

Acton KL is a non-sectarian learning environment. We value and respect each person’s beliefs. We explore the importance various religions have played throughout history but we do not offer religious education.

Quality

No exams. How do we measure progress?

In Laura’s words: “First of all, be assured of one thing: you are completely qualified to assess your child’s intellectual and moral growth. No teacher certification or education degree necessary. You are smart. You are experienced. You know your child better than anyone in the universe.”

We measure progress and feedback in a variety of ways. There are also studio systems to measure effort, character, and excellence. We want an Eagle to be empowered to prove his worth to the real world.

How does ActonKL ensure a high quality environment?

Deep at the core of Acton Academy is our commitment to serving customers and receiving transparent feedback. Because of this, we ask families to participate in weekly Customer Satisfaction Surveys in which we ask them to rate us on a scale of 1-5 with regards to how well we accomplished our promises. We then share the results with the community. These surveys are our most important metric to measure the success of the learning community.

Application

How do I know if ActonKL is suitable for my child and family?

The best way is to go through our application process, which includes a week-long Immersion Trial (and an Onboarding Quest if applying for our Middle School). From our experience, your family will know through this immersive experience. To start your audition, schedule a call and we will follow-up!

What is the ActonKL application process?

We want ActonKL to be the right learning community for your family. Our application process invites families to demonstrate their talent and desire to go on a Hero’s Journey through a series of 4 Questions that will help families to know themselves better and also allow ActonKL to get to know the family a little. After that, there would be a 1-week Immersion Trial where your child gets a taste of ActonKL.To learn more, schedule a call.

What does a typical day at ActonKL look like?

A typical day, Mon-Fri starts at 8.30am, includes Socratic discussions, independent core skills work (mathematics, reading, writing, programming), real-world group projects (starting a business, publishing a book, building wind turbines etc.), P.E., art, and civilization.

What is the ActonKL calendar?

Our session calendar is similar to the American Acton Academies so that the Eagles have opportunities to do exchanges and global collaborations. Details can be found in this link https://actonkl.org/calendar/

What is expected of me as a parent of an Acton Eagle?

Acton KL expects every parent to be actively involved in his or her child’s Hero Journey. For example, ActonKL families have Family Plans and participate in Parent Huddles – immersive workshops where families share their learnings together.

There is extensive support for the Acton Parent to draw inspiration in the form of blogs from the founders themselves, a Parent Handbook and the whole of the Acton community both locally and abroad.
