Animal Kingdom / Cooking & Chemistry Exhibition 2020-2021 Sprint 3

Animal Kingdom Exhibition

Preschool/Spark Studio

Baby chicks grow up quickly!

The PS Eagles’ Exhibition challenge was to present their observations and understandings of the pets that they had cared for throughout the Sprint. They were to showcase what they knew about the animals, and what they learned through research and observation, as well as what they learned when they actually had to care for the animals first-hand.

The Eagles presented their understanding of how their animals looked by drawing a sketch of them, then recreating them out of recycled materials. The Eagles truly gave a lot of thought to the creation of their 3D pet. Bottles, boxes, string and a myriad of scavenged materials were used to create fish, cats and birds … some using the actual shape of the material to visually represent the animal, some building the animal from scratch. The challenge was how to enhance the basic materials to showcase their understanding of the animal.

AR presented her fighting fish with flair.
Watch out for AX’s crocodile!
AS was proud of his blue puffer fish.
AR showed her love for her beautiful fish.
AN’s goldfish was small and cute.

Many of the PS Eagles were already used to presenting video Exhibition pieces, having honed their skills with this format over a few Exhibitions. On video day, armed with their scripts, they showcased their models and talked about their animals, prompted by questions from the Guide. They were proud of their work and knowledge and inspired and informed viewers with their presentations.

A few of them were not comfortable making the video and one Eagle refused to review it after it had been shot. The Guide asked if he would be more comfortable reviewing it alone, and when he said yes, the Guide stepped out of the recording room so that he could do it by himself.

Upon review, many Eagles were satisfied with a single take, while a few asked for a reshoot.

AY showed off his cute little green fish.
Watch out for IA’s wriggly worm!
AYV’s cat said ‘meow!’
AY’s flying mice was huge!
J’s green fish floated!
OR showcased her chick and mealworm home.
S’s fish was full of detail.
SY’s mealworm had many parts to it.
S’s fish was very pretty and colourful!
R’s husky dog wagged its tail.

On the Exhibition Day itself, the Eagles were excited to watch each other’s videos and share their videos with their parents. They celebrated the success of the Exhibition the next day with extended playtime after the Exhibition reflection.

Cooking & Chemistry Exhibition

Pre-Exhibition

Elementary School

This Sprint, the Elementary School Eagles explored the world of chemistry …. delving into atoms, molecules, the structure of cells, and common gases to inspire a love of experimentation and exploration.

In the cooking component, they were challenged to create a recipe for a dish of their choice, produce the dish, and, as it was a virtual Exhibition, produce a cooking video. An added bonus was to also prepare the dish for other Eagles and have a dish swap on a special Super Delivery day.

Delicious, enticing, and healthy.

To inspire the Eagles to think forward with positivity and excitement, the Writer’s Workshop this round was a pitch for a field trip that they wished to go on post-lockdown. The Studio would go the the location of the best pitch, as voted by the Exhibition viewers.

Where will the ES Studio go, post-MCO?

Middle School & Launchpad

The MSLP Eagles delved deeper into more complicated recipes and analysed the science behind the cooking … what scientific process made this dish taste better, or that dish look the way it did? Some points they observed and examined were – What are some areas of chemistry? How does chemistry impact your daily life? How does it impact cooking – Flavour? Safety? Presentation? The final challenge was to present their findings vis a vis their recipes in an interesting, informative video.

What’s the science behind making the perfect croquembouche tower?

The MSLP Eagles also faced the challenge of organising a special Super Delivery day … from the food swap logistics to how to inspire their fellow Eagles to participate. Other aspects also had to be considered, like delivery logistics, which they explored with Super Deliverer Mr. Jia’s guidance.

First pick-up, bright and early.

The Writer’s Workshop challenge was to look at food in a practical context – as part of the restaurant service industry. To this end, the MSLP Eagles donned restaurant reviewers’ hats and presented informed, discerning restaurant reviews.

What makes a restaurant successful?

Exhibition Day

On Monday morning, as per usual, all the Eagles felt the adrenaline while waiting for their Exhibition site to go live. Soon enough, sharp at 9am, it did.

Before long, the ES Eagle leading the coordination and building of the ES site noticed that there were some issues with the videos that were hosted on the site. With great speed and effort, he started to work on rectifying the broken links, seeking support from the MS Eagles and Guides to get the site running smoothly. It was his first time leading the site programming and it was courageous of him to take on this responsibility.

Being a leader also means asking for help when you need it.

The ES Eagles presented their recipes in various video formats … some real-time, some sped-up. Some Eagles chose to provide constant commentary, some let their actions do the speaking. The same applied to the Writer’s Workshops … some of which were presented in slideshows, some in videos and some in writing. The overall aim was to efficiently present their cooking and pitches in eye-catching, informative formats that tempted and inspired viewers to recreate their dishes and vote for their pitch.

MSLP Cooking & Chemistry Videos

The MSLP Exhibition also showcased the MSLP Eagle’s recipes with individualistic flair. In some videos the science behind the recipes were presented statically, dispersed throughout the presentation or explained after. Other Eagles chose to incorporate the science throughout the presentation, explaining how science drove the cooking process and the choices that they made. The final aim was to inform, educate, inspire and tempt viewers with their recipes.

The restaurant reviews also reflected the Eagles’ personalities and deeper understanding of the genre. There were very candid, personable reviews, subjective, professional reviews, and reviews that noticed different aspects of the restaurants according to what was important to the reviewer. All-in-all, a well-rounded cross-section of different review styles.

D’s review of Portofino was a cincher.

Exhibition Reflection

The overall feedback from viewers was positive and constructive. On Tuesday, the Eagles had time to reflect on their experience and learning from the Exhibition feedback.

The ES Eagles ended the Sprint by acknowledging things they were grateful for:

“I am grateful to my mum for helping me to video (camera person) my cooking video.”

“I am grateful to my mum for showing me how to edit.”

“I am grateful to my mum for introducing me to Loom for my Writer’s Workshop.”

Th MS Eagles had heated discussions about Exhibitions in general, with topics ranging from leveling the play field by providing more guidelines and requirements for Exhibition work, to vote counting, a relevant topic, of late.

Overall, a delicious and informative Sprint! Thank you Eagles for your culinary efforts!
