Build a Tribe 2021-2022 Sprint 1 Week 4

Weekly Updates

Preschool / Spark Studio (PS) Update

Altruism & Responsibility

There’s been a lot of kindness, helpfulness, and generosity in the Studio in the past week. The Eagles have helped each other to clean up – not just the play area, but also their friends’ lunch messes. RO invited JE to join their game for the very first time and excitement and joy shown out from JE. Such a lovely sight!

IA, one of the older Eagles, has been helping his peers with their work – showing them how to make their houses as well as how to use a Smart Tray.

The oldest (7yo) and the youngest (turning 3) Eagles in the Studio sat talking, observing and painting together. So much kindness and patience observed.

MAR dropped the pencil sharpener and the scraps fell out. He didn’t know what to do. X came to help and showed MAR where to get the broom and the two youngest Eagles started cleaning up together.

IA assisted AYV to complete a project. Peer learning at its best!

RO invited JE to be an ally and showed him how to use a gun! It was a boys vs girls battle! Such great fun and imagination!

The Eagles have also kept up their sense of responsibility for their own Studio, and Clean-Up Time continued to be efficient. When the Time-keeper announced that it was Clean-Up time, one or two of the Eagles would take the lead to start cleaning up, followed by everyone else. Quite a sight!

Wipe, wipe, wipe. wipe it till it’s clean!

Scrub, scrub, scrub. Scrub it till it shines!

Quest: Where is Mr. Daniel??

The Eagles were given 3 pictures with Mr. Daniel hidden inside. They had to help each other find Mr. Daniel in the pictures within a minute! To make it even more challenging, the Eagles could not point at the screen, they had to describe Mr. Daniel’s flag return .

“Mr. Daniel is wearing read and white standing next to the blue and white big umbrella stall.”

Tick, tock, tick tock …. the Eagles managed to find Mr. Daniel, but couldn’t beat the timer!

Where’s Mr. Daniel? Can YOU spot him?

Show & Tell

Out of the 4 Eagles who volunteered to do Show & Tell, only IA and AYV brought their items. IA shared his globe and told us about the different continents.

SY: Can the globe glow in the dark?

IA: No, of course not! This isa globe, how can a globe glow!

IA gave a little talk on geography with his globe.

Perhaps GLOBE was heard as GLOW?

AVY showed us her tiny toy puppy that can be taken apart and put back together!

Socratic Discussions

This week’s Socratic Discussion – Playground vs Swimming Pool, which would you choose? The swimming pool was definitely the crowd favourite. Why did you choose the one you chose?

AAR: There’s slide at the pool!

IA: I have been to the playground so often during COVID.

JE: It’s fun!

RO: I chose playground because I have swimming.

AX: I get to shoot people with water gun and dive.

AYV: Because I have a friend there and there are big floaties.

The Eagles made their first round of choices.

We chose swimming pool.

Suddenly a witch came and the swimming pool now has a giant slide and the playground is now in a big fun fair with all types of rides! Which would you lose now and why?

Yet again swimming pool won the votes, except 1 Eagle chose the fun fair playground because she could go “Hiak, hiak, hack.”

Those who changed over said, “I love giant slides!” 1 Eagle stood firm on his choice of swimming pool. “I want to go to the beach and swim!”

Is it OK to change your mind? Why? When can you change your mind?

Milk Art!

Beautiful colors and swirls and whorls! That’s what you get when you mix milk and dish soap. The Eagles watched a video about it first, and were bursting with curiosity when it came to doing the experiment for themselves.

“WHY does it go round and round??? WHY are the color all running away??”

They then stirred their milk and it became … chocolate milK?? More like black milk!

It was funny to see how the Eagles walked SO SLOOOOOOWLY through the Studio; holding their dishes of milk SO CAREFULLY to avoid spilling them. One … step … at …a …time!

Swirl and mix the paint with the milk.

Slowly … slowly … does it.

Play & Exercise

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and the PS Eagles don’t want to be dull! There was plenty of play and exercise throughout the week and the creativity and imagination that flowed out was priceless!

What can we do with balls and cones?? Let’s make ice cream! The production line started, followed by ICE CREAM, ICE CREAM, WHO WANTS ICE CREAM?

A new game has been discovered … soccer!

A bit of bending and stretching can really get the day going right!

The Eagles decided to do some chalk drawing instead of their usual play.

Mirror image drawing!

AYV chopped and squashed some veggies and served them to Ms WW for breakfast! How thoughtful!

Weekly Elementary Studio (ES) Update

Writer’s Workshop

In Writer’s Workshop, the ES Eagles worked on their introductions and drafts, and received feedback from their buddies or writing partners. Each Writer’s Workshop introduces different types of writing from reports, to journals, to this Sprint’s focus – biographies. Each type of writing has its own process, and the Eagles follow the process to produce pieces of work that reflect their understanding of that type of writing, as well as the world around them.

It’s a very varied group of Heroes that the ES Eagles have chosen to write about for their biographies – including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Tesla, Ole Kirk Christiansen, Boudicca, JK Rowling … these are the people who inspire the Eagles in some way. Learning about their lives will spur the Eagles on in their own passions and give them insights into how their Heroes succeeded in own their fields. This is a powerful, practical history lesson, versus memorising dates and events that have nothing to do with them.

Who’s your Hero?

Mozart stirred up the world of music.

Ole Kirk Christiansen brought us … LEGO!

JK Rowling fired up the imagination of the world.

Nikola Tesla made electricity possible for us.

Seeds of Potential

Apples come in different colours, shapes, sizes, and textures. Notice that each apple has a star and seeds within. We’re all different on the outside. On the inside, we are all special – we are all – Stars.

Additionally, we have seeds. Seeds of Potential. Left on their own, these seeds will not take root and bear fruit. Given the proper foundation in soil, solar energy, and water, and given careful and attentive maintenance, these seeds may flourish.

What are your Seeds of Potential, your gifts, and talents?

“I am very athletic.”

“I am good a gymnastics.”

“I am good at drawing.”

“I’m good at singing.”

What do you need from your friends, family, and Studiomates to make sure your Seeds of Potential grow?

“I wish that sometimes I am given the freedom to nurture my Seeds of Potential, allowing me the space to work on them.”

“Find an expert and learn from them, maybe a person who is good at your talent, and ask them.”

Inside an apple there is a star, just like inside us, there are Seeds of Potential that will make us stars.

Thank you, Eagles, for sharing and keep nurturing those Seeds of Potential so that they take root and bear fruit.
