ES Session 5, Week 1

This past week marked the beginning of a new session in our ES community!

Imagine tomorrow you and your family moved to a farm in rural Malaysia. This farm is over 6 hours from the nearest grocery store. Would you be able to survive and grow enough fresh food to stay healthy? This sparked many interesting answers from our young Eagles and that was the start of our new Community Garden Quest. J Welcome to our new session, a place where we will experiment and explore together the growth in gardening and in ourselves.

To start off, we watched a time lapse video of a garden and discussed the motivation of gardening to each of us. Then, we explored some vegetable, herb and flowers using our five senses and did a little research activity to find out more about our favorite plant. As they were having fun tasting, smelling and touching every single plant (even flowers!), it struck me that children are natural investigators. Give them anything, and they will soon find something marvelous about it. A good reminder to the adults! 🙂

Hmm how do they taste like?

Over the week, we went out to the garden and learned about weeding and harvesting. Not too fun in the beginning under the hot, hot sun and I have also learned that weeding is definitely not our Eagles’ favorite activity. Nevertheless, the Eagles found other activities which they enjoyed such as harvesting (or eating), trimming and transplanting. We now officially have plant ninjas and plant hairstylists at ActonKL. Feel free to hire them. 🙂 Finally, after two mornings’ work, we successfully tidied the garden yay!!

Also, congratulations to our new Eagle Bucks Council, Max and Abhiram! They will be stepping up to support the community and to hold us accountable to our promises.

For P.E., our Eagles started Dodgeball with two professional coaches at the nearby Taman Tun Dr. Ismail Community Center. Lots of fun but it comes with some injuries and losses. Time to teach them about sportsmanship. 🙂

On Friday morning, we had a combined Circle Time with the MS Eagles to share the different stages in our personal Hero’s Journey, a journey we see in movies we watch, books we read and even the life we live.

Eagles deep in discussion

On Friday, we launched this session’s Writers’ Workshop, Procedural Writing. Eagles will be learning about the different components that make a good piece of procedural writing, while going through the Writing Process and also critiquing each other’s work. This week, Eagles focused on analysing examples, purpose and characteristics of Procedural Writing. After that, they spent forty minutes writing and we ended the workshop with a feedback and sharing session. Thank you Eagles for putting in so much effort into this!

Hard at work during the Writer’s Workshop 🙂

We ended the week with a family outing to the rooftop Secret Garden at One Utama. With over 500 species of tropical and temperate plants in 4 different
zones, there was so much to explore. We had the pleasure of being guided by Ms. Elaine Yim around the garden. With her warm personality and passion for
gardening, she made the Secret Garden a feast for the eyes and the mind. Both parents and Eagles definitely had fun running around and learning about the
different plants. Do check out the Secret Garden for a lovely weekend stroll!
