Programming 2020-2021 Sprint 2 Week 4

Weekly Updates

Preschool / Spark Studio (PS) Update

Trying New Things

Throughout the week, the PS Eagles tried out many new Morning Exercise routines and Afternoon Games. Some they liked, some they didn’t.

The Line Jump workout was very tiring and energetic!

The Emoji Dance game was fun for some, but not for others.

The PS Eagles are open to try games that both work and don’t work and the twice daily Zoom meetings have been fun and high-energy, so far.

While trying out new technology like the Whiteboard Feature in Zoom for a Drawing / Guessing game, we discovered pros and cons. Pro: It is fun! Con: It is disruptive.

This was a good opportunity to call attention to the PS Studio’s ROEs, specifically Item 3 – Be focused and not distracted.

Quest: Distant Learning / Montessori Cultural – Geography

It was time for Mystery Bag 4 this week! On Friday, they opened up the bag and learned about the countries in Asia, focusing on 20 selected countries.

The PS Eagles said that this week’s challenge was enjoyable and that they learned so many things:

  • I have a friend who comes from Mongolia and another friend who lives in China.
  • Mongolia and China are so near each other.
  • I have a friend from Japan.
  • So funny, Turkey. Same like the bird.
  • My friend lives in Nepal.
  • I was born in Vietnam.
  • I feel like putting these flags on a hamburger!
AZ and AA started the day by cutting and sticking the toothpicks onto the Asian flags.

AD decided to use cellophane tape instead of glue for the flags.

    JO at her workspace.

JO displays her completed Map with Flags.

AL in the process of sticking the Asian Flags into the Asian Continent Map.

    Done after a few breaks.

AN used plastic straws for his work.

    Finished!

SO finished and displayed her work too!

Home Challenges

The PS Eagles shared their Home Challenges for the week:

AL: I took care of my baby brother.

AD: I decorated my Grandfather’s birthday cake.

ABH: I helped mummy to sweep the floor.

SO: I made potpourri with my Grandfather.

AZ: I helped my family make the bed.

Elementary Studio (ES) Update

Prepping for Exhibition

This week, the ES Eagles started working on their final project for the Exhibition. Throughout the past few weeks, the Eagles had been experimenting with Code.org, sharing their creations and receiving feedback from their peers, and now they have more or less decided on what they’d like to present.

“Code.org is SO FUN! I love making them dance how I want!”
Through Code.org, the ES Eagles have experienced that programming isn’t as complicated as they had thought.

Virtual Museum Tour

Despite the COVID19 RMCO, the ES Eagles managed to ‘visit’ a museum. Thanks to the National Museum of Computing’s virtual tour, they enjoyed a virtual scavenger hunt while discovering fascinating facts about computers, calculators,  phones and all the technology we take for granted.

The scavenger hunt challenge comprised:

  1. Find the Doomsday computer
  2. Find the archive
  3. Go outside (virtually)
  4. Find the gift shop
  5. Find something that you find interesting

At the debrief, the ES Eagles shared what they found interesting in the museum:

  1. Super Mario is old enough to be in a museum.
  2. Early computers were really big!
  3. So big that it would fill my house!
  4. A computer named W.I.T.C.H. weighs 2,500kg!
  5. A virtual tour is just as interesting, even if you can’t ‘feel’ the exhibits.

Looking forward to Week 5 when the ES Eagles will be creating their own site for this Sprint’s Virtual Exhibition. Do look out for the date, coming to you soon!
