Animal Kingdom / Cooking & Chemistry 2020-2021 Sprint 3 Week 4

Weekly Updates

Preschool / Spark Studio (PS) Update

Eagle Bucks Time!

On Friday afternoon during Closing Circle, as many as 7 Eagles exchanged their Eagle Bucks at the Eagle Buck Store.

Everybody Pitch In!

A few of the PS Eagles were unwilling to play the Clean-up Game after Outdoor Playtime on Wednesday. Those who cleaned up thought that it was unfair that not everyone did the cleaning up.

The PS Eagles had a discussion about the situation and drafted a new promise.

Quest: Montessori Cultural – Animal Kingdom

The PS Eagles were asked to choose a pet that they had been observing / taking care of over the last 3 weeks (or more). They were challenged to make a 3D model from recyclable materials / containers. They started by drawing a sketch of the pets that they had chosen.

AX, “I want to draw my cat Leia.”
AS, “I have a pet fish, but I want to design a puffer fish.”
SO, “I want to make my fish with different materials. This part is made of aluminum, and this part is made of cloth.”
AR, “I am drawing my fish too.”
Our completed pet designs!

Friday Art Pack (Fish)

The PS Eagles were given an art pack that consisted of 3 fish templates, aluminum foil, bubble wrap, some rope and pipe cleaners. They created beautiful fish from everything!

What can be created from plain old templates?
SA, “This is my rainbow fish!”

Elementary Studio (ES) Update

What is a Solution?

Week four of our Cooking and Chemistry Sprint saw us exploring the concept of solutions. “Wait, which is the solute and which is the solvent?” the Eagles got a little confused over this question and had to spend some time figuring it out.

Nutrients … Where To Find Them?

The ES Eagles also went through their kitchens to find packets with nutrition fact labels and were surprised by the amount of calories present in some of their favourite food. “I didn’t know there are so many calories in nuts!”

Sharing our calorie discoveries with each other.

Chocolate Chip Cookies!!

This week’s Cooking Challenge was … delicious chocolate chip cookies! Yum! The Eagles had a lot to say about the lessons learned during this challenge:

Eagle 1: “I pressed the button on the oven 3 times and accidentally locked my oven door! My mum taught me how to unlock the oven door. I learned how to do that today.”

Eagle 2: “I learned that cookie batter can be very sticky.”

Eagle 3: “I learned not to put the cookie dough into the freezer, it makes it so soft and sticky.”

Eagle 4: “I didn’t have chocolate chips, so I added chocolate instead.”

One Eagle had to delay making his cookies because he hadn’t prepared butter. Mum said, “I had been dropping hints the whole week – in the end it’s a lesson to remember.”
The Cookie Monster would be so happy!
