Survival 2020-2021 Sprint 6 Week 5

Weekly Updates

Preschool / Spark Studio (PS) Update

Sleeping Bags and Shelter

On Monday of Week 5, the PS Eagles were challenged to make their own sleeping bags and shelters.

AY used his blanket to make his sleeping bag.

AA used her blanket and pegs to create a sleeping bag of her own.

SO got her sleeping bag all ready.

JE used his blanket and some clothes pegs to make his sleeping bag.

SH made his sleeping bag from a bedspread and clothes peg, and climbed inside!

It was quite hot inside, so SH decided to have a fan next to his sleeping bag.

IA also used some clothes pegs and his blanket to make a sleeping bag.

For his next Survival challenge, IA used his blanket and some furniture to create a tent.

AA’s shelter – all ready and waiting.

Fully equipped with pillows, a self-created sleeping bag, and a soft toy companion.

AN was happy with his tent.

SH created a 3-man tent with some bedsheets and chairs for his sister. It was also decorated with trees in the background.

Art Challenge: Making an Ice Cube Shelter

On Friday, the PS Eagles encountered a very challenging Art Challenge: Making an Ice Cube Shelter, otherwise known as an igloo.

Can you make a shelter with ice-cubes? Let’s watch a video on how to make an igloo.

AA learned that stacking ice is very challenging, but she kept going.

AN decided to return the melting ice cubes to the freezer.

AA also decided to put her tray back into the freezer. It was such a hot day for building igloos.

SO showed everyone what happened to her ice building.

IA showed his ice building in progress.

IA was proud to finish the igloo for his Shopkin.

AV displayed her ice building.

ZA displayed a close-up of her ice building with a toy inside it.

ZA and her ice building.

JE kept on going. Almost there!

SH was in the flow, building his igloo. It kept crumbling, but SH kept on going.

Weekly Elementary Studio (ES) Update

What!? We’re already at Exhibition Prep week!? The Eagles were given time to catch up with Challenges that they had missed over the Sprint, and to decide what they would like to present at next week’s Learning Exhibition.

There are 5 main topics to choose from:

Save me! – How to deal with an injury?

Light my fire – we need warmth and fire to cook.

Give me shelter – I need to sleep!

Hydrate me – I need clean water!

Feed me! I’m hungry!

Visit Acton Academy KL’s 2020-2021 Sprint 6 Exhibition next week: Thursday 29th July 2021, 9am to see how the Eagles tackle these survival skills.

Exhibition Videos

The Eagles are adept at creating video exhibits by now, and they got right into planning how to present the survival skills that they discovered this Sprint

“How can I show myself bandaging teddy?”

“I can figure this out by myself!”

“How’s my knot-tying skills?”

“I built a shelter with whatever I could find around the garden.”

Hero Sharing

Closer to the end of the week, the Studio had a hero Sharing session with Mr. Zahariz. Mr. Zahariz shared his experience travelling around the world … mostly on bike! The Eagles were fascinated to learn that he traversed 60 countries, and roughed it out in the wild whenever he could.

About Me | Diary Of A Traveller

Q: “Do you travel alone?”

A: “Yes, I travel alone. I travel on my bicycle or on horseback.”

Setting off.

Q: “Why did you want to travel?”

A: “It had always been my dream, ever since I was your age.”

Q: “How do you charge your phone?”

A: “I don’t use my phone when I travel remotely.”

Q: “What if someone important needs to call you?”

A: “What I do is this: before I travel into a remote area where there is no phone coverage, I would let my family know that I will be away for a certain period of time and when I return, I would let them know that I am safe.”

Q: How do you get food?”

A: “I follow this rule: if I am going away remotely, say for 10 days, I would pack for slightly longer, like for 15 days.”

Q: “How do you video yourself when you are travelling alone?”

A: “I would set up the camera and act in front of it.”

Stunning scenery.

Q: “How do you charge your camera?”

A: “At the beginning, I had a solar charger, however that was heavy, so now I carry lots of spare batteries for the camera.”

Q: “You live in a tent?”

A: “Yes, (laughs) when I was travelling, I stayed in a tent. That was my house.”

Q: “Where are you now?”

A: “Now I am here in Malaysia. I returned right before the pandemic hit us.”

Thank you, Mr. Zahariz!

“Keep dreaming, and hold on to your dream. One day you will be able to fulfill it. Keep dreaming.” Zahariz
