This year’s E-Ship Sprint is an odd one. Technically, it has two exhibitions instead of one. The first exhibition is this week’s Lemonade Standoff Challenge for the Elementary School (ES) and Investor Pitch for the Middle School (MS) on Wednesday 25th July. The second exhibition is the Children’s Business Fair on Friday 5th August.
Moving towards double dose of challenge feels like a long run across the desert. Simba (in the Lion King) did that before he had to face Scar to take back the pride rock. Technically it’s not that long: the original video in the Lion King was 17 seconds, but someone thought that the realistic presentation is a marathon. It is odd what you can find on YouTube sometimes.
Such runs take energy, discipline, and hard work. It is preparation and the long march to the battlefield. For Acton Academy, the destination is the Exhibition.
Road to Exhibition
The ES Eagles went through rounds of dry wet runs, testing their lemonades, refining their sales pitch, and master the art of basic business accounting. Wait, did you say business accounting? For our 6+ years-old?
Here are their words:
To summarize guys, revenue is basically the price, cost is how much you use to buy ingredients and profit is how much you earn to buy LEGOOO!
The MS Eagles had a lot more to do. They refined their investor pitches, presentation displays, product prototypes, and also funding calculations. They even had a Google Hangout on Wednesday morning to make sure everyone is on the same page.
Still, there’s time for some Super Hero Photos
Exhibition Day
The Eagles are on the 12th exhibition since the inception of ActonKL. You would have thought it would be smooth sailing. It’s almost never the case. Each exhibition is different. They can differ from the challenges, the group setting, the mood of the day, and surprises like accidents. Yes, accidents. One booth of four Eagles had two just one hour before the exhibition. First, they broke a pitcher of sweet lemonade. The floor was sticky, and glass spilled everywhere. 30 minutes later, they broke a decorative vase with flowers. Their signature features—a natural boutique invitation to drink is gone. Their spirits dipped. But the show must go on. The few Eagles huddled and continued. They made a lemonade quickly using whatever ingredients they had remaining.
Resilience! Maybe they were without a choice. A quick group huddle helped everyone regained their bearings.
Here are the four teams. They compete with each other for the highest sales from all the visitors. After an hour of sales to the Exhibition guest, the Eagles had to calculate their profit quickly. The one who earned the most is the winner!
The Middle School had a non-stop chatter during the Exhibition. They had an open round in the first hour, followed by a top 3 X-Factor style pitch at the end. They had three professional judges with deep industry experience: Dr. Yunus, Tan Aik Cheong, and Omar Fateh. Dr. Yunus is the Association of Science, Technology and Innovation’s (ASTI) president. Tan Aik Keong is the founder of Agmo Studio, a multi-award winning mobile apps development company. And Omar Fateh is a private equity director of Ekuiti Nasional.
After all that work, we had a year-end potluck with all the ActonKL community members!
There was good food, good company, and a truckload of durians!
Fun End of the Week
There is still the Children’s Business Fair in 8 days. The Eagles needed to recharge before going into high mode again next week. The ES Eagles did ice skating on Thursday, and then a movie session for Fun Friday.
“Can you do your forward wiggle???”
“Let’s swizzle race over there!”
“More ice skating next sprint please!”
Guys hurry up and complete your goals we are waiting for our fun Friday to finally happen!!
Hang on tight because next week is another roller coaster ride to the Children’s Business Fair!
