Our Story

How did Acton Academy Kuala Lumpur (ActonKL) start? Here’s the short answer: “Curiosity, experimentation, inspiration from resourceful children around the world … and a lot of luck.”

Here’s the longer version in three blog posts:

Part 1: Inspiration from children around the World

These children around the world took charge of their own learning due to odd circumstances. Our curiosity was piqued and we asked: “Can students teach each other, instead of having teachers?”

There was only one way to find out. Experiment!

What better way to learn Maths than through Ramlee Burger, online sources and each other? Our very first Eagles loved learning this way. We thought, “Is it possible to scale this experiment?”

The answer? It WAS possible to run a 40-student class with high levels of engagement and impact with virtually no teachers. The next step … could we scale further to apply ‘peer learning’ to an entire learning cycle?

Acton Academy

It turns out that there was already a group of revolutionaries doing just that—Acton Academy. We applied using the portfolio of experiments that we had gathered over the last 12 months and became the first Acton Academy outside of the American region!

Out of 1,200 applications, WE were chosen! Was it really luck … or a firm conviction that it could be done?

The same team that experimented together is now on a major Hero’s Journey, creating the best possible learning environment for our young families. Growing from strength to strength with a courageous community, we are on the mission to Find a Calling to Change the World.
